Microsoft’s Courier ‘digital journal’: better than Ipad?

This morning Techmeme.com had  a breaking news story about Microsoft’s new Courier device. Engadget broke the story here. But the basics are this:

It will run an operating system other than Win7, most likely CE6. The device will incorporate an e-book reader as well as built in camera and it folds down to the size of a 5×7 photo. The whole device is based around handwriting recognition and will feature searching against any items in memory via pen stylus and show results in a sort of blog like format.  kinda nifty.

so is this a contender to the IPad?  If you hop over to the Engadget article and look at the video…. it just might be. and it does have something the IPad doesn’t. Handwriting recognition.  I think it looks like a pretty good contender at the very least.

I think we are now going to start seeing the emergence of more of these devices from other vendors soon.  The two big players are now in it its only a matter of time until we be seeing a Google Gpad or a Asus PPD13 (personal pad device 13″)?

Happy reading!

I will be covering this in my weekly podcast #60 which will be going live in under one day.  I hope you can wait that long Internets. 😉

HTC vs Apple… FIGHT! Let the Patent Infringement battle begin.

Best Picture Ever!

Today Apple decided to dust off their legal bat and go after HTC . The infringement suit details 20 different patents all related to the IPhone interface and related hardware. This is a quote of Spectacular Steve Jobs quoted directly from an Apple Press Release:

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”

Well, at least we can say he is serious about this.  Gizmodo has a posting that details all 20 patent infringement documents and a lot more . and Techmeme.com of course has been covering all major blog postings and every other news agency that is falling over themselves to try to cover this news and bring some new perspective. The below links were what were available at the time of this writing as TechMeme saw it. WOW!

New York Times, TechCrunch, Engadget, Reuters, PC World, Digits, Associated Press, Silicon Alley Insider, NEWSFACTOR, Ars Technica, Android Phone Fans, Android Central, CNET News, eWeek, Digital Daily, L.A. Times Tech Blog, Electronista, AppleInsider, Phone Arena, Boing Boing, iPhone Buzz, Fone Arena, Brainstorm Tech, Erictric, ZDNET.com.au, Maximum PC, SlashGear, internetnews.com, VentureBeat, Google Watch, DailyTech, Google Android Blog, jkOnTheRun, Macworld, Softpedia News, louisgray.com, Bits, Nelson’s Weblog, Epeus’ epigone, Datamation, DailyFinance, App Advice, www.pocketgamer.biz, Guardian, mocoNews, The Apple Core, Digital Trends, MacDailyNews, Neowin.net, Pulse2 and The Register

So, is Apple warranted in taking these steps? Is Steve Jobs just trying to eliminate healthy competition? For good or for bad, this is gonna be one helluva fight!

Left Claw North!! Blasts from the interwebs past

I was cleaning out my emails from ages gone by and happened across these oldies but goodies from the ancient Internet. These were the things that made us laugh at work while pulling overnight installs or late night upgrades. Do you remember any of these? Do you have any to add? I have one more I could add but I am going to need at least a few suggestions from the audience before I post it. 😉

Here is my short list:

Badger Badger Badger

Singing Horses

Lobster Magnet

I’ve seen things.. I’ve seen them with my eyes!!

Penn and Teller in Vegas = Awesome!

I had a fantastic time in Vegas and I got to fulfill a childhood dream of actually seeing Penn and Teller perform live.  The show was just wonderful and those guys are really a class act. Both Penn and Teller really engage the audience and are mesmerizing to watch. Another cool fact is that after each and every show they meet and greet the audience and sigh autographs and get pictures taken. EVERY SHOW! WOW! I can now tick this off my sheet of things to do. If you are in Vegas and wondering what to do just go to the Rio and buy tickets to see Penn and Teller.
